What is the basic difference between Printer Ribbons, Ink Cartridges and Toner?
When a printer runs out of ink for the first time, we have to figure out whether we need a ribbon or a cartridge. Usually if you check with the model number of the printer, it should indicate whether you need a ribbon, a cartridge or a toner.
One major difference between Ink Cartridges and Printer Ribbons is their durability. The Printer Ribbons last much longer and give you a lot more value than the Ink Cartridges. Another downside of an Ink Cartridge is that it tends to dry out if not used at regular intervals.
Ink Cartridges
Inkjet Printers use Ink Cartridges. The little container of the cartridge actually contains liquid ink, which is used by the printer to print out documents and images. The printers that provide color printing options have numerous cartridges fitted in the chamber. This chamber consists of a black ink cartridge and uses primary colors to come up with a variety of different colors. An ink cartridge is a component of an inkjet printer that provides the ink that is deposited onto paper during printing. Each ink cartridge contains one or more ink reservoirs, of the color black or the primary colors of the palette. Printers today also add electronic contacts and a chip that communicates directly with the printer.
Printer Ribbons
Printer Ribbons are mostly used in POS printer machines and dot matrix printers. The Printer Ribbon uses either pressure or heat over the ribbon to print the text on to paper. A printer ribbon is a spool of alternating colored dyes in a cartridge.
Laser Toner
A toner is something different all together. Toner is a powder mixture used in laser printers and photocopiers to form the printed text and images on the paper. Toner particles are melted by the heat of the fuser, and are thus transferred to the paper.
Look out for yield capacity when purchasing a cartridge, ribbon or toner.
A high yield cartridge, ribbon or toner holds more ink than the standard, and as a result, offers considerably more prints. High yield cartridges are more expensive but are often worth the extra money for print heavy consumers.
